Brutus #04-261

(Fostered in Malmo, MN)

Brutus was found as a stray in southern MN and the local humane society was unable to locate his original family.  RAGOM was contacted and we are the lucky ones to be his foster family.

Brutus is one COOL dog and an easy-going guest.  He is calm, relaxed and a joy to have around.  Brutus is a big guy and tips the scales at a whopping 120 pounds and is now on a diet to bring his weight down.  He is neutered and has a beautiful red coat.  When he was found his coat was very matted.  The volunteer who picked him up from the humane society removed most of his mats and worked on brushing out his coat.  Brutus then went to our local groomer and received a bath and further clipping.  The mats did create a somewhat ragged look but his coat is soooo beautiful that as it grows out it will be glorious.

Brutus is heartworm positive and is scheduled to begin treatment this Monday followed by weeks of restricted activity.  The vet found him to be in overall good health and estimates his age at 8-9 years.

Brutus is affectionate and an absolute love.  He enjoys taking walks, is well behaved on a leash and gets along well with the other dogs he has met.  He is a giant sweetheart.  Brutus is housebroken and well mannered.  I would recommend that Brutus live in a home without cats.  He does like to chase our cat and his enthusiasm to play may pose a problem.

Brutus is a “chow hound” and will counter surf looking for food.  Once I reorganized my kitchen this has not been a problem.  I can relate.  It’s hard to be on a diet.

The medical expenses for Brutus’ heartworm treatment will be substantial.  If you would like to contribute financially to help out this big guy or if you are interested in adopting Brutus please contact RAGOM.  Thank you.

Further updates will be coming.  He is so handsome that I can’t stop taking pictures!

11/11/04:  Brutus continues to do well in foster care and has adapted beautifully in our home.  He is a well mannered, good natured boy.  Brutus gets along very well with our senior dog, Maggie, who at times can be a bit grumpy around other dogs.  Brutus enjoys chasing the cat but there is no malice, just the joy of the chase.  Brutus does have some fear of thunder but does not seem to be fearful of other noises.  He enjoys the twice daily walks down our country road and behaves well as vehicles pass.  When you give him a treat, he takes it very gently.  Brutus is really fun to have around and great company.  Brutus loves the company of men and just shines when he gets extra attention.  He is so lovable we can't resist giving him a hug.

10/4/04: Brutus brought me to the RAGOM picnic and both of us had a wonderful time.  Brutus loved all the attention and enjoyed the company of all the other beautiful Goldens.  He loves other dogs, people and the water.

Brutus is one great dog looking for a home. He is an adaptable dog and loves to cuddle up.  Brutus is a joy.

9/14/04:  Brutus had guests on the Labor Day Weekend, a three month old puppy name Kya and her human family.  It was such fun to watch him enjoy playing with a puppy.  He loved the extra company, social interaction and attention.

Brutus is such an easy going guy and a real love.  He loves to take walks down our country road and explore the grasses growing along the edge.  The exercise and good diet are trimming his weight and he is looking good.  His coat is growing back and he is quite a handsome Golden.

Everyone who has met Brutus has fallen with love with him.  He is a sweet, loving dog.  Now he just needs his own family.

8/31/04:  Brutus completed his second heartworm treatment and the vet has given him the okay to resume normal activities.  The tennis balls have been returned the yard and we took two great walks today.  Brutus loved it.  He has lost 12 pounds, his coat is filling out and he is looking good.  Brutus will be started on heartworm preventive and needs to return to a vet in four months for a follow up blood test.  He is now up to date with his vaccinations.

Brutus is ready to find his new home.  He is a wonderful boy and is a great foster dog.

8/24/04:  Brutus continues to do very well following his initial heartworm treatment.  He had a vet check-up on August 17th and the vet says he is doing good.  Brutus is scheduled for his second treatment on August 30th and will spend the day at the vet hospital.  He has lost some weight and is starting to look and feel good.  Hopefully, the vet will give us the go ahead soon so that Brutus can starting getting some exercise.  Both of us miss our daily walks and we want to pull the tennis balls from storage.  Brutus continues to enjoy his time with us and we love having him as our guest.  He is a very nice dog and a joy to foster.

8/4/04:  Brutus is home following a two-day stay at the animal hospital for treatment of his heartworm disease.  He is stiff and sore from the injections and is spending his time resting.  Brutus will be on restricted activity for 30 days allowing time for the medication and his body to eliminate the heartworms.  Brutus is scheduled to see the vet again on August 17th to check on his progress.  A month following his initial treatment he will return for a day in the hospital for another treatment to kill the immature heartworms in his blood.

Brutus was happy to see me when I picked him up from the vet with his tail wagging and a big doggie smile on his face.  I was smiling, too.  He is a lovable guy.
