Hi Everyone,

I wanted to let you all know that Jersey, (#02-070), is doing great one year after I adopted him.  He is now 11 1/2 years old and although he may not be going fast, he's definitely going strong!  When I met Jersey a year ago, my heart went out to him.  This old soul came to RAGOM due to a divorce situation.  He had been with his previous family his whole life and now he had to find a new home.  I've always held a place in my heart for the old dogs and when Jersey put his big paw on my lap, I knew it was meant to be.  I am so grateful to RAGOM for the opportunity to adopt this wonderful boy!

I know the thought of adopting an older dog causes concern for many people, but having adopted older dogs before, I can tell you without a doubt that they are by far the most loving and well-behaved dogs there are.  They bond quickly and show such love and gratitude toward you that it never fails to touch my heart.  It has always amazed me how quickly they adapt to their new home and their new family.

Yes, older dogs can develop medical problems, but so can any dog, young or old.  Jersey was diagnosed with cancer less than a month after I adopted him.  My vet discovered a grade 2 mast cell tumor on his side.  She recommended surgery as soon as possible and thought that his prognosis would be quite good.  I sat there with Jersey and I remember saying to him, "But I've barely fallen in love with you and now you're going to cost me all this money?!"  Jersey sat up and put both of his paws on my lap and said with his eyes, "I'm yours.  I love you!"  I had to laugh.

The surgery and recovery went well and now a year later, there are no further signs of the cancer.  Jersey has settled into his routine here and seems so happy.  I think he really enjoys being the only dog and the center of attention.  An older dog fits my lifestyle as well.  Working full-time, I just don't have the time and energy for a young dog or a puppy.  Older dogs aren't in your face so much.  They are content just to be around you.  Also, I think Jersey, like most older dogs, enjoys the quieter life I can provide for him.  And as you can see from the photos, he seems quite content.  Jersey is such a joy; I love him dearly and couldn't ask for a better companion.  I hope more people will consider giving these white-faced, older pups a chance.

Remember, puppies hold our attention for a while, but an old Golden will hold your heart forever!

Thanks again RAGOM!
Shelly
