For hundreds of years, street dogs have been a part of the Turkish environment. It wasn't until about 10 years ago that Golden Retrievers joined this population. First introduced to the country by those who could afford to import them from neighboring countries, they are now readily available for purchase on the streets of the cities for as little as 50 Turkish Lira (about $20 US dollars) and have become a very common dog throughout Turkey. However, way too many are ending up in municipal shelters and on the streets.
Golden Retrievers are not for everyone - they are big, they shed, and they require lots of exercise and attention. It is then, sadly, that many families give them up. Other reasons for abandonment include reasons similar to what we see here in the United States - lifestyle changes, costs of ownership, medical and family allergies.
As a result, there are many homeless dogs in Turkey and not enough room in the shelters for all of them. Because there is no shelter euthanasia and few adoptions in Turkey, dogs either live out their lives in a shelter or are put on the streets or in the forests after they are spayed or neutered and given a rabies vaccine. Golden Retrievers don't survive well on the streets. They are not good pack animals and won't fight back, so many are attacked by other dogs and their survival depends on people helping them.
How the Rescue Efforts Began
Golden Retrievers are filling the shelters and running alone on the streets of Istanbul and other cities in Turkey. An American traveling in Turkey took notice of these dogs and also learned that municipal shelters were full of Golden Retrievers. There was no place to go for these dogs.
Recognizing their plight, the traveler contacted Adopt a Golden of Atlanta (AGA) a Golden Retriever rescue in Atlanta, Georgia. AGA mobilized and began rescue efforts. Learning there were more Goldens in need, RAGOM reached out to AGA to help.
Our efforts to help the dogs in Turkey are unlike anything we have ever done before, and we could not do it without your generous donations. With your continued support we can welcome additional dogs to RAGOM. Make a donation today to help these special dogs get to America - and safe in our care.
