It is important that we all understand that public shelters, privately funded shelters, and breed rescue all have the welfare of animals as their primary goal. Each serves animals in their own way with their own resources. We all need to understand that breed rescues and so-called "no kill" shelters operate primarily on volunteer efforts and private donations and deal with relatively small numbers of animals, whereas public facilities rely primarily on public money and city employees and deal with huge numbers of animals. We in breed rescue must be careful not to pass judgment too quickly when public shelters have to have time limits on how long animals can stay. They do not have the human resources that we have and are more open to litigation dealing with animal bites and animal health than private groups. It is important that we all work together and keep in mind what is best for the animals. We cannot save them all, but together we can save as many as we can. |
